Dear fellow learners and teachers,
The Center for Social and Emotional Education has launched a new
series of social emotional learning features on our
web site: www.csee.net
This month, Steven Tobias, Psy.D. talks about children developing an
emotional vocabulary. Steve is the co-author (with Maurice Elias and
Brian Friedlander) of two books on emotionally intelligent parenting.
These features will include a range of people talking about a given
social and/or emotional competency (what is it? Why is it important?
And, what can we do to promote it?) or concrete steps we can talk to
further effective social emotional education in our schools. Upcoming
features include Ray Pasi, Ph.D. (school principal and author of
‘Greater Expectations: Promoting SEL and Higher Achievement in your
School’); David Schonfeld, MD (pediatrician and a faculty member at
Yale’s National Center for Children Exposed to Violence) talking about
creating safe schools; Anna Weselak (from the National PTA) talking
about strategies that further substantive home-school partnerships and
many more!

4. June 20, 2002 update - Summer 2002 Conferences and Workshops
A listing of people and organizations providing talks, workshops and conferences regarding aspects of caring is shown below. Below our basic list and links is more extensive information on these gatherings. You can scroll to the area you wish.

The summer is a good time for reflection and personal growth ... and a good time to consider going to a workshop or conference or talk ... reading a meaningful book, traveling, and more. Any sharings you wish for us to pass on is most welcome. All the happenings below are worth perusing.

Recently, I have had conversations with Jonathan Cohen, the Co-Founder for The Center for Social and Emotional Education located in New York City. He has shared about the works they are doing, particularly following the September 11 tragedies. It would be nice if you can give some particular attention to his site and its activities at this time (note the third listing below). I know that along with the conference information, the Center for Social and Emotional Education has begun a series of "monthly spotlights," that focus on various forms of caring practices such as listening, building empathy and more. In the Aftermath of September 11?

Leading Experts Discuss How to Establish Effective Social and Emotional Learning Programs in Our Classrooms at National Summer Institute New York, New York – May 16, 2002 – The Center for Social and Emotional Education (CSEE) will hold its sixth annual summer institute “Educating Minds and Hearts: Safe Schools, Healthy Character Development, Academic Success and Social-Emotional Education” on July 9-12 at The Graduate Center of the City University of New York.

The Institute is co-sponsored by The Continuing Education and Public Programs at the Graduate Center of the City University of New York; Nassau County BOCES; The American School Counselor Association; and The New York State Center for School Safety.

The attack on America last September has created a heightened concern for determining how to develop safe, caring and responsive schools for our children. In response to growing public anxiety and renewed professional interest, renowned experts in social emotional education will join together for a national summer institute to discuss how to establish effective, quality Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) and Character Education programs in our classrooms.

Parents, educators and mental health professionals from around the world are expected to attend the Institute that will address such topics as creating safe learning environments; understanding self- and emotional awareness; developing problem solving and decision making skills; and implementing effective SEL programs.
Members will have the opportunity to receive 2 credits for participation in a Bank Street College of Education course (Social Emotional Education: Core Principles and Practices) linked to the Institute.

“This interdisciplinary conference will present the core principles and practices for how parents, educators and administrators can work together to make our schools and communities thoughtful centers for learning,” stated Jonathan Cohen, Ph.D., Co-founder and President of CSEE. “We should help our children to develop these invaluable life skills: to listen themselves and others; to appreciate differences; and to solve problems in nonviolent ways.”

Formation Principles and Practices Retreat/Workshop
The Formation Principles and Practices Retreat/Workshop is for people who want to experience a Courage to Teach retreat and expand their understanding of the formation process, to learn more about how to create evocative and trustworthy spaces for learning and reflection, and to bring greater depth to the work they are already doing. This retreat/workshop is not designed to prepare participants for leadership of a two-year CTT program, but rather provides an introduction to formation principles and practices and how they might be used in various settings within educational or related institutions.

The first three days of the Formation Principles and Practices Retreat/Workshop will have an experiential focus as participants come together in retreat to experience the core principles and practices of teacher formation as used in the Courage to Teach program. The last two days are designed to explore how participants might use these principles and practices in their own work--as part of professional development activities, in facilitating Courage to Teach study circles, or in other short-term renewal work within schools or related organizations. This program isto educators from all walks of education, and if there is room, to interested persons from other professions as well.

This institute introduces teachers to the concepts and techniques that form the foundation of emotional and social learning. Based on the work of Daniel Goleman, CASEL (Collaborative for the Advancement of Social and Emotional Learning) and the instructor's extensive experience in school settings, we will explore how to renew your classroom environment with strategies that promote community, emotional well-being and deeper engagement of students in learning. Specifically, we'll cover:

* a theoretical framework which provides the rationale for emotional and social learning, the basic principles of design and implementation, and for spiritual development, including rites of passage

* stages of group development and methods appropriate to each stage

* methods for helping students develop learning readiness: focus, concentration, listening and motivation to learn
